Goethe A1 Study Plan: 8-Week Guide

Flamingua mascot at A1 level — Goethe A1 study plan

You have 8 weeks to prepare for the Goethe A1 exam. That's enough time if you're consistent and focus on the right things.

This study plan assumes you're starting with some basic German knowledge (at least a few weeks of study). If you're starting from zero, add 4-6 weeks of foundation work before this plan.

Quick Exam Overview

The Goethe-Zertifikat A1 has four parts:

Most people struggle with speaking. I took the Goethe A2 in Winterthur and noticed this — people who were fine with reading and listening would freeze during the speaking part. That's the section you need to practice most. (See our detailed speaking practice guide.)

8-Week Study Plan

Week 1-2: Foundation & Grammar

Goal: Cover all core A1 grammar topics

Focus areas:

Daily routine: 30-45 min grammar study + 15 min speaking out loud

Week 3-4: Vocabulary & Speaking Practice

Goal: Build A1 vocabulary (500-600 words) and practice self-introduction

Focus areas:

Daily routine: 30 min vocabulary + 30 min speaking practice

Tip: Record yourself speaking. Listen back. You'll catch mistakes you don't notice while speaking.

Week 5-6: Exam Format Practice

Goal: Understand exam format and time limits

Focus areas:

Daily routine: 1 section per day (reading, listening, writing, or speaking)

Common mistake: People spend too much time perfecting grammar and skip speaking practice. The speaking section is 15 minutes and worth 25% of your grade. Practice it daily.

Week 7-8: Final Review & Speaking Drills

Goal: Lock in speaking confidence, review weak areas

Focus areas:

Daily routine: 20 min review + 40 min speaking practice

Speaking Section Breakdown

This is where most people lose points. Here's what to expect:

Part What You Do Preparation
Part 1: Selbstvorstellung Introduce yourself (name, age, where you're from, job, hobbies) Practice this until you can say it perfectly without thinking. This is free points.
Part 2: Ask questions Ask your partner questions based on cards (work, hobbies, food, etc.) Practice W-questions (Wo...? Was...? Wann...?). Keep it simple.
Part 3: Respond to requests Your partner asks you for something (Can you help me? Can you bring bread?) Practice "Ja, kein Problem" and "Nein, tut mir leid." Don't overthink it.

What to Do the Week Before

Day of the Exam

From my experience: Being very academic helped me with exams. But I saw most people struggle with the speaking part — which is ironically the most important for the C permit. If you can nail the speaking section, you're in good shape.
