German Negation: Nicht vs Kein

Flamingua mascot experimenting — German negation guide

German has two ways to say "not" or "no" — nicht and kein. In English, we just say "not" for everything. In German, you have to choose which one based on what you're negating.

The rule is actually simple once you see it: kein negates nouns with indefinite articles (ein/eine). nicht negates everything else.

When to Use Kein

Use kein to negate nouns with ein/eine (indefinite articles).

Positive Negative
Ich habe einen Hund. Ich habe keinen Hund.
Das ist eine Katze. Das ist keine Katze.
Ich brauche ein Auto. Ich brauche kein Auto.

Kein follows the same pattern as ein:

Think of kein as "not a" or "no." If you would say "a dog" in English, use kein in German to negate it: "no dog" = kein Hund.

When to Use Nicht

Use nicht for everything else:

Quick Rule

If you can replace the article with ein/eine, use kein.
If not, use nicht.

Where to Place Nicht

The placement of nicht matters. It usually goes:

1. At the End (Negating the Whole Sentence)

2. Before the Specific Thing You're Negating

3. Before Adjectives and Adverbs

Common Patterns

Sentence English Rule
Ich habe kein Geld. I have no money. kein (ein Geld → kein Geld)
Ich habe nicht das Geld. I don't have the money. nicht (das Geld = definite)
Das ist keine Frage. That's not a question. kein (eine Frage → keine Frage)
Ich arbeite nicht. I don't work. nicht (negating verb)
